CNAO and CERN collaboration evolves

The long-standing partnership between CERN and CNAO, the National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy in Italy, also includes education activities since autumn 2023, when CNAO speakers delivered a series of 5 CERN Academic Lectures. These lectures were on topics related to hadron therapy and to Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), a form of tumour treatment that will soon be available as an additional treatment option at CNAO thanks to the construction of a new treatment building. This building will house a therapy device using protons, carbon and other ions in addition to BNCT, as well as an area reserved for oncological research.

The CNAO expansion project in the making: a new building for a dedicated proton therapy device; an experimental technology for the treatment of complex tumours; an innovative source to test new particles, such as helium, oxygen and iron.
