How can CERN tools help to uncover market manipulation?
It might surprise you that particle physics and economics have something in common. At CERN, researchers look for interesting anomalies in massive volumes of data. Market regulators do the same while looking for microscopic signals of manipulations. CERN and the Wageningen University are developing new data analytics techniques to protect commodities from fraud, to improve the design and regulation of financial markets and preserve their integrity.
In 2023, a collaboration with leading market-surveillance experts and regulators was launched to explore how to recreate financial markets using technologies designed at CERN for high-energy physics and now widely used in industry. The collaboration brings together many regulatory agencies across the world as well as CERN.
By combining academic research, industry expertise and CERN’s expert knowledge, we are uniquely positioned to drive innovation and create new solutions and tools for financial market surveillance.– Marjolein Verhulst, chair of the International Expert Group on Market Surveillance
