Successful test of demonstrator magnet for the GaToroid ion therapy gantry

In 2023, the niobium-titanium demonstrator magnet for GaToroid was successfully completed and underwent comprehensive testing, exhibiting excellent performance.

The new compact non-rotating gantry design enables the treatment of tumours from different angles.

GaToroid, an innovative ion therapy gantry design proposed in 2018, is based on a toroidal magnetic field that precisely directs therapeutic ion beams onto patients, ensuring the optimal angle for treating specific cancers. The results obtained in 2023 mark a significant milestone for the project, and underscore the team’s resilience and commitment to proving GaToroid’s technical feasibility, despite pandemic-induced delays.

Winding of the GaToroid coil which is a novel superconducting and lightweight gantry that can surround a patient and potentially revolutionise the delivery of hadrons for therapies, including cancer treatment.
